Private houses and October-only mazes are easy to find in South Carolina. A place you can walk into on an ordinary week, with a haunting story you can trace to the venue or a news report, is a shorter list. These five made the cut. The Dock Street Theatre, the Old Exchange, and Poogan's Porch are in Charleston. The USS Yorktown is the carrier you board at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. The South Carolina State Museum is in Columbia. All five have a public door on an ordinary week. The ghost parts are labeled as what Lawson Roberts told Kalyn Oyer, what Christopher Parham and Marybeth Clark told Susan Cohen, what Rigel Kocar told Antonio Stinson, what Bobbie Ball told Cohen, what Brian Parsons told Live 5, what Mac Burdette told that same Live 5 piece, what Don Bommarito and Andrew Kuhn told Charistin Clark, or what Tut Underwood and Bemo Prince told Taylor Kearns. None of this is a claim that a spirit has been proved.
Schedules move. Phone numbers and hours below are what those sites posted when this was researched in October 2026. Check before you go.
Dock Street Theatre, Charleston
The Dock Street Theatre will let you walk the building on a weekday, and the FAQ page says a public self-guided tour is available Monday through Friday. The FAQ page, read in October 2026, does not print Lawson Roberts, a cold wind, or four doors. Roberts told Kalyn Oyer, in a Post and Courier story dated October 31, 2019, and carrying an updated line of September 10, 2024, that a cold wind brushed past him on the stairs and four latched doors slammed shut. The page does not print a clock.
The address does not sit on one ZIP. The directions page prints "Dock Street Theatre 135 Church Street Charleston, SC 29401." The same site's contact block prints a mailing address, "P.O. Box 356 Charleston, SC 29402." 29401, and 29402, are not the same ZIP. The box is mail. It is not the theatre door. The visit line uses 135 Church Street.
The phones do not sit on one extension, and two names sit on two numbers. The directions page, the FAQ page, and the call page print the box office as 843.577.7183, and the FAQ also prints (843) 577-7183 with hyphens. The href I saved on those pages is tel:+18435777183. Operations and management, on the call page and in the footer, is 843.577.5967. I did not save a tel: href on 5967. The FAQ prints Donnie Newton, operations manager, at (843) 720-3832. The call page prints "Donnie Newton (Operations Manager of Dock Street Theatre): 843.720.3968." 3832, and 3968, are not the same extension. The FAQ prints Kelly Brolley-Monahan at (843) 647-7374. The call page prints Development as 843.647-7373, with a dot and then a hyphen. 7374, and 7373, are not the same extension. The visit line uses (843) 577-7183, the box office. It does not use 3832 or 3968. The FAQ hides the box-office email behind a script I did not decode. I am not guessing the address.
The hours do not sit on one clock. The FAQ prints public self-guided tours "Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm." The call page prints box-office hours in non-show weeks as Tuesday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. onsite, and Friday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. remote. In show weeks it prints Tuesday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. onsite, Saturday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. onsite, and "Box Office also opens onsite 1 hour prior to each performance." Nine to 4:30, and 1 to 5, are both on the site. They are two clocks. Operations hours on the call page are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., "Closed Saturdays and Sundays." October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. Sunday is not on the self-guided line. Sunday is not on the onsite box-office days, except the line about one hour before a performance. I did not open that Sunday's show list, so I do not have a curtain for October 4.
Roberts's account is what he told Oyer, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says he was in the apprenticeship program, bringing a speaker down from the balcony, when a cold wind blew by him. He says it almost felt like someone had brushed by him, and that the only people there were the union steward Pete and himself. He says he ran into the main theater and all four latched doors slammed shut at the same time, and that Pete's dog snarled with the hair up on its neck. He dates it as "1990 or so." One sentence uses a coarse verb I am not reprinting. He also says he had always heard that Junius Booth was murdered by his talent agent with a fire poker. That is what he says he had heard. I am not treating it as a death record.
A second page I opened tells a different Booth story, and it names different people. Susan Cohen's Charleston City Paper piece, dated October 26, 2011, quotes Christopher Parham, "a city employee and managing director of the theater," and Marybeth Clark, "the associate artistic director of Charleston Stage." Parham says Booth beat his manager with a fire iron and, the next day, played Richard III. He says Booth died on a steamboat. Clark's line on that page calls the woman "Netty." Other retellings spell Nettie. Parham says the floors were probably adjusted six to eight inches, not a full story of a missing lower half. He says he has not had a ghost experience in eight years at the theatre. Two of his sentences use a contraction I am not reprinting. Clark describes a phone ringing in the elevator and a tract in the call box. She did not say she saw a figure. The 2011 page also says the theatre was open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and free to wander. The 2026 FAQ prints Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and it does not print the word free. I am not carrying the 2011 price, or the 2011 hours, forward as the October 2026 door. Parham says the assault was reported in The Charleston Mercury. I did not open the Mercury. I am not writing that paper as if I had.
Visit: 135 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Mail is P.O. Box 356, Charleston, SC 29402. Box office (843) 577-7183. The site prints 843.577.7183 and the href I saved is tel:+18435777183. Operations (843) 577-5967. I did not save a tel: href on that line. Newton is (843) 720-3832 on the FAQ and 843.720.3968 on the call page. charlestonstage.com. FAQ page, checked in October 2026: self-guided tours Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. I did not open that Sunday's list. Roberts's doors are Oyer, The Post and Courier, October 31, 2019, updated line September 10, 2024, with no clock printed. Parham and Clark are Cohen, Charleston City Paper, October 26, 2011. The FAQ page does not print either story.
Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, Charleston
The Old Exchange will sell you a ticket, and the visit page says the door is open seven days, with three named closures. The visit page, read in October 2026, does not print Rigel Kocar, footsteps, or a door that shut itself. Kocar, "a tour guide at the Exchange Building," told Antonio Stinson, in a story posted October 21, 2019, at 3:37 p.m. CDT. I opened that story on a WKRG page. The dateline on the page reads "CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)." I did not open a separate WCBD URL.
The address on the homepage, the visit page, and the contact footer is "122 East Bay Street Charleston, SC 29401." I did not open a second street number. The visit line uses that line. The frame does not print 122.
The phones do not sit on one line. The homepage prints "(843) 727-2165" and "(888) 763-0448" in the same phone sentence. The visit page prints "Phone (843) 727-2165" and, in the elevator note, 843-727-2165. I did not save a tel: href on either page. 727-2165, and 763-0448, are not the same number. The visit line uses (843) 727-2165. It does not use the toll-free line.
The hours and the child prices do not sit on one sentence. The homepage paragraph prints Monday through Saturday "9 AM - 5 PM" and Sunday "11 AM - 5 PM." The visit page prints Monday through Saturday "9:00 AM - 5:00 PM" and Sunday "11:00 AM - 5:00 PM," and it says the building is closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The shared footer on the homepage, the visit page, and the contact page prints Sunday "11PM - 5PM." 11 a.m., and 11 p.m., are not the same door. The visit page also prints tour times "Every half hour. 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM," and says those times may vary. A door at 9, and a tour at 10, are both on the page. They are two clocks. The homepage prices print "Children (6-12): $12" and "Children (0-6): Free." Age 6 is inside both of those brackets. The visit page prints "Children (7-12): $12.00" and "Children (0-6): Free." The footer prints "Children 7-12: $12" and "Children Under 6: Free," which does not name age 6 at all. Adults are $16 on the homepage and the footer, and $16.00 on the visit page. That adult price matches. The child brackets do not. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, and it is not New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. The visit page and the homepage paragraph put Sunday at 11 a.m. The footer puts Sunday at 11 p.m. I am not picking the footer over the visit page, and I am not pretending they say the same thing.
Kocar's account is what he told Stinson, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says, "I believe there are things that we can't explain, that are beyond human rationale." He says he heard footsteps come to the door and then leave while he was changing, and that nobody was outside when he stepped out. That is his own report. A second story on the same page is about managers, not about a figure he says he saw. He says evening managers turn around and find the doors to the Issac Hayne Room shut. The page spells it Issac. I am not correcting the page, and I did not open a separate biography. The page says Hayne was hanged on August 5, 1781. That date is the page's date. I did not open a court record. The 2026 visit page does not print Kocar.
Visit: 122 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC 29401. (843) 727-2165. I did not save a tel: href. The homepage also prints (888) 763-0448. oldexchange.org. Visit page, checked in October 2026: Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The footer prints Sunday 11 p.m. Adults $16. The child brackets do not match across the homepage, the visit page, and the footer. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, and it is not one of the three named closures. Kocar's footsteps are Stinson, posted October 21, 2019, 3:37 p.m. CDT, on a WKRG page with a WCBD dateline. The visit page does not print him.
Poogan's Porch, Charleston
Poogan's Porch will seat you for brunch or dinner, and the homepage says the door is open every day, with a gap between the two meals. The homepage, read in October 2026, does not print Bobbie Ball, a bar stool, or a kitchen door. Ball, the owner, told Susan Cohen, in a Charleston City Paper story dated October 26, 2011, that a bar stool flew across the room while she was on the phone with the security company.
The name of the woman in the house does not sit on one spelling. The restaurant's our-story page, which I opened, prints "Zoe Saint Amand" in the biography and, lower down, "The St. Amand sisters of 72 Queen Street." Saint, and St., are both on that page. Cohen's 2011 piece prints "Zoe St. Amand." The visit line uses Poogan's Porch for the restaurant. It does not pick a spelling of the woman's name.
The address does not sit on one wording, and it is the same door. The homepage prints "72 Queen Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401." The holiday block prints "72 Queen Street, Charleston, SC 29401." South Carolina, and SC, are both on the site. The visit line uses 72 Queen Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
The phone digits match, and the link target does not match the shape of a ten-digit +1 link. The homepage and the contact page print 843-829-4332 and also (843) 829-4332. The href I saved is tel:+1-843-829-4332, with hyphens after the 1 and inside the number. The visit line uses (843) 829-4332. It does not use the hyphenated target.
The ordinary hours match across the blocks I opened. The homepage prints brunch daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner nightly from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Another block prints dinner Monday through Sunday, 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and brunch Monday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The gap from 3 to 4:30 is on both blocks. The holiday block prints Thanksgiving 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., prix fixe only, Christmas Eve 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Christmas 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., prix fixe only, and New Year's Eve and Day 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, and it is not one of those named days. The ordinary Sunday door is brunch and then dinner, with the afternoon gap.
Ball's account is what she told Cohen, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. She says she was trying to lock the building and could not get the alarm to set. She says, "all of a sudden a bar stool came flying across the room, knocking over the other stools," and that the kitchen door then went flying open, "as if someone had kicked it open and had gone into the kitchen." She says she did not see anybody. She says, "It had to be the ghost. I believe she must have been a little upset at all the construction noise from that day of work." Cohen also quotes Ed Macy, who says, "To my knowledge, she's been seen well over 200 times, oftentimes in broad daylight like during the brunch hour." "To my knowledge" and "well over 200" are his estimate. I am not using 200 as a checked count. The our-story page tells an unsigned account of a worker, pots, and a cup. It does not name the worker. I am not turning that page into a second named witness. The 2026 homepage does not print Ball.
Visit: 72 Queen Street, Charleston, SC 29401. The homepage also prints South Carolina in place of SC. (843) 829-4332. The site target is tel:+1-843-829-4332. poogansporch.com. Homepage, checked in October 2026: brunch 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., seven days, with the holiday clocks listed above. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, and it is not one of those holidays. Ball's stool is Cohen, Charleston City Paper, October 26, 2011. The homepage does not print her. The our-story page spells the name Saint Amand and St. Amand.
USS Yorktown, Patriots Point
The USS Yorktown will sell you a ticket onto the ship, and the Patriots Point page says the museum is open daily. The page, read in October 2026, does not print Brian Parsons, a radio, or a tug. Parsons, "the Supervisor of Museum Services at Patriots Point," told Live 5, in a story updated October 31, 2018, at 8:15 p.m. EDT, that something tugged his radio in a room where nothing was close enough to catch the cord.
The name on the museum page is "USS Yorktown (CV-10)." Live 5 prints "USS Yorktown" and does not print CV-10 in the sentences I used. Charistin Clark's ABC News 4 story, published November 28, 2022, at 3:01 p.m. and updated at 6:46 p.m., with no zone printed, has volunteer Don Bommarito distinguishing CV-5, which sank, from CV-10, "which is now anchored right here in Mount Pleasant." The visit line uses USS Yorktown for the ship you board, and CV-10 when the sentence needs the hull.
The address on the page I saved is "40 Patriots Point Rd. Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464." I did not open a second street number. The visit line uses 40 Patriots Point Rd.
The phones do not sit on one number, and the targets have no plus. The footer prints "CONTACT US (843) 884-2727" with a target tel:8438842727, and "Lost & Found (843) 971-5044" with a target tel:8439715044. Neither target has a plus or a leading 1. 884-2727, and 971-5044, are not the same extension. The email on that footer is info@patriotspoint.org. The visit line uses (843) 884-2727. It does not use tel:8438842727, and it does not use the lost-and-found line.
The hours I opened agree on a 10-to-5 museum day and disagree on the ticket window and the store. The page prints "Museum Open Daily 10 am - 5 pm," "Ticket Window Closes at 4 PM," and "Ship Store Open Daily 9 am - 5 pm." Ten to 5, a window that closes at 4, and a store from 9, are three clocks. The same saved page prints "Today at Patriots Point Sunday October 4 Open today from 10AM to 5PM." I saved that page on October 4, 2026, which is a Sunday. The today line and the daily line agree on 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I did not open a ticket price. The HTML I saved has no dollar sign.
Parsons's account is what he told Live 5, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says he felt a tug on his radio, then a pop, and that he was about five feet from anything. The page spells the cord as "stretchy chord." He says, "No way." He says he took it as maybe a sign that somebody was letting him know they were there. Mac Burdette, "the Executive Director at Patriots Point," is on the same page. He says the staff answer, when people ask if there are ghosts, is that they do not know, and that if the dead are present they are the ship's own people. His sentence uses a contraction I am not reprinting. He also says you have to look at the reports and decide for yourself whether they are compelling. Bommarito, on the 2022 page, describes a slammed door and a shadow in a passageway, and a girl who said someone whispered a birthday greeting. Andrew Kuhn, "tour guide manager for Bulldog Tours," describes a voice from the engine room telling a group to get out. Kuhn is a second witness on a second page. He is not Parsons. The 2026 museum page does not print Parsons.
Visit: 40 Patriots Point Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. (843) 884-2727. The site target is tel:8438842727. Lost and found (843) 971-5044. That target is tel:8439715044. info@patriotspoint.org. patriotspoint.org. Page checked in October 2026: museum daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., ticket window closes at 4 p.m., ship store 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The saved page also prints Sunday October 4 open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I did not open a ticket price. Parsons's radio is Live 5, updated October 31, 2018, 8:15 p.m. EDT. Bommarito and Kuhn are Clark, ABC News 4, November 28, 2022. The museum page does not print them.
South Carolina State Museum, Columbia
The South Carolina State Museum will sell you a ticket into the old mill, and the visit page prints a weekly schedule. The visit page, read in October 2026, does not print Bemo Prince, a pair of boots, or a shadow. Prince told Taylor Kearns, in a WIS story published October 29, 2008, at 4:44 a.m. EDT and updated November 3, 2008, at 2:18 p.m. EST, that he saw boots go into a shadow by the Hunley exhibit. The two clocks on that page do not share a zone abbreviation.
The address on the visit page is "301 Gervais Street Columbia, SC 29201." It is printed more than once, and I did not open a second street number. The visit line uses that line. The frame does not print 301.
The phone on the visit page is 803-898-4921. I did not save a tel: href. The visit line uses (803) 898-4921. A download of the hours-and-admission URL returned 403, not the page, so I am not using a second phone from a page I could not open.
The hours on the visit page do not sit on one Sunday clock. The header prints "Sun: 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Mon: CLOSED Tues. - Sat: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m." The same page prints "Open today from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM" in more than one block. I opened the page on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Noon to 5, and 10 to 5, are not the same Sunday door. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is the line that is not contradicted by the today widget. Monday closed is on the header. I did not open a general-admission price. The visit page says planetarium and 4D theater tickets are an additional price and does not print the number.
Prince's account is what he told Kearns, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says he saw legs and feet, or boots, go into the shadow near the Hunley exhibit while he was getting the museum ready on a Sunday. He says he went around the schoolhouse and nobody was there. He says, "I have to say I saw what I saw and what I saw was the boots go into the shadows." He did not say he saw a face. On the same page, Tut Underwood, "from the South Carolina State Museum," says, "Bubba, whoever he was, was a mill worker killed in an industrial accident many many years ago." "Whoever he was" is Underwood's phrase. I did not open a death record, and I am not treating the nickname as an identified person. The same WIS story quotes Ann Dreher on Longstreet Theater at the university. I left that building off this list. I did not open a 2026 page that shows a public door there on an ordinary day. A later State story about the museum is online. The fetch timed out, and I did not open it. I am not using the people quoted there.
Visit: 301 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC 29201. (803) 898-4921. I did not save a tel: href. The hours-and-admission URL returned 403. scmuseum.org. Visit page, checked in October 2026: header Sunday noon to 5 p.m., Monday closed, Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The same page prints "Open today from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM." October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. I did not open a general-admission price. Prince's boots are Kearns, WIS, October 29, 2008, 4:44 a.m. EDT, updated November 3, 2008, 2:18 p.m. EST. Underwood's nickname is on that same page. The visit page does not print either one.
How to use this
Start with the door that matches the week you are actually having. The Dock Street Theatre self-guided walk is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 135 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Mail is P.O. Box 356, ZIP 29402. Box office (843) 577-7183, href tel:+18435777183, printed with dots on the site. Operations (843) 577-5967, with no tel: href saved. Newton is 3832 on the FAQ and 3968 on the call page. October 4 is a Sunday. I did not open that show list. Roberts's doors are the Post and Courier, October 31, 2019. Parham's steamboat and Clark's elevator are the City Paper, October 26, 2011. I did not open The Charleston Mercury. The 2011 page says the wander was free. The 2026 FAQ does not print that word.
The Old Exchange is (843) 727-2165, at 122 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC 29401. I did not save a tel: href. The homepage also prints (888) 763-0448. Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday is 11 a.m. on the visit page and 11 p.m. in the footer. Adults $16. A six-year-old is inside both a paid bracket and a free bracket on the homepage. The visit page starts the paid child bracket at 7. October 4 is a Sunday, and it is not a named closure. Kocar's footsteps are the October 21, 2019, story. The Hayne doors are a second story on that page, about managers, and the page spells Issac.
Poogan's Porch is (843) 829-4332, at 72 Queen Street, Charleston, SC 29401. The site target is tel:+1-843-829-4332. Brunch 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., dinner 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. October 4 is a Sunday, and it is not Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, or New Year's. Ball's stool is the City Paper, October 26, 2011. Macy's "well over 200" is his estimate on that page. The our-story page spells Saint Amand and St. Amand, and it does not name the worker in the pot story.
The USS Yorktown is (843) 884-2727, at 40 Patriots Point Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. The site target is tel:8438842727. Lost and found is (843) 971-5044, target tel:8439715044. Museum daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ticket window closes at 4. The store opens at 9. The saved page prints Sunday October 4 open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I did not open a ticket price. The ship you board is CV-10. Parsons's radio is Live 5, October 31, 2018, 8:15 p.m. EDT. The page spells the cord as chord. Bommarito and Kuhn are the November 28, 2022, piece. Burdette says the staff do not know.
The South Carolina State Museum is (803) 898-4921, at 301 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC 29201. I did not save a tel: href, and the hours-and-admission URL returned 403. Header hours: Sunday noon to 5, Monday closed, Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5. The same visit page prints open today 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. October 4 is a Sunday. I did not open a general-admission price. Prince's boots, and Underwood's nickname, are WIS, October 29, 2008. The updated line on that page is November 3, 2008, 2:18 p.m. EST. Dreher's Longstreet account is on that page, and Longstreet is not a stop here. I did not open the later State story.
If a guide adds a ghost this research did not find on the venue's site or in the news pieces cited below, enjoy it as a story and leave it there.
These five doors are not in one town. Compact binoculars and a South Carolina road atlas are the practical extras if you are driving between them.
