Four Georgia places with a haunted reputation and a public door

Private houses and October-only mazes are easy to find in Georgia. A place you can walk into on an ordinary week, with a haunting story you can trace to the venue or a news report, is a shorter list.

Private houses and October-only mazes are easy to find in Georgia. A place you can walk into on an ordinary week, with a haunting story you can trace to the venue or a news report, is a shorter list. These four made the cut. The Fox Theatre is in Atlanta. The Springer Opera House is in Columbus. The Grand Opera House is in Macon. Hay House is in Macon. All four are real buildings with a public door. The ghost parts are labeled as what Jamie Vosmeier told Avery Newmark, what Paul Pierce said on the Springer's news page dated December 11, 2025, what Bob Mavity told Ed Grisamore and what Mavity told Michael W. Pannell, or what Darin McClure told Tyler Jones. None of this is a claim that a spirit has been proved.

Schedules move. Phone numbers and hours below are what those sites posted when this was researched in October 2026. Check before you go.

Fox Theatre, Atlanta

The Fox Theatre will sell you a ticket, and the contact page says the ticket window is open Friday and Saturday. The contact page, read in October 2026, does not print Jamie Vosmeier, a hospital bed, or a nurse named Mary. Vosmeier, "vice president of sales and marketing," told Avery Newmark, in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution story dated October 7, 2021, that the hospital room is "the creepiest space ever."

The address and the phones do not sit on one line. The contact page prints "660 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308," (404) 881-2100, and "Box Office: (855) 285-8499." The same page also prints a dial line for the box office without parentheses. I did not save a tel: href on any of those lines. The visit line uses the box-office digits with an ordinary +1 link. It does not pretend a target was there. 881-2100, and 285-8499, are not the same extension. The email on the ticket lines is boxoffice@foxtheatre.org. A vertical blade in the Commons frame reads 640 HOTEL, on the building to the left of the FOX sign. 640, and 660, are not the same door number. The visit line uses 660, the number on the contact page I opened.

The hours match on the window and not on the call center. The contact page prints "In-Person Ticket Office Window Support," "Friday 10 AM - 5 PM," and "Saturday 10 AM - 3 PM." It adds, "Ticket Office will open three (3) hours before doors on show days." The call center line is "Monday through Friday - 10 AM - 6 PM" and "Saturday - 10 AM - 3 PM." Friday until 5 at the window, and Friday until 6 on the phone, are not the same clock. Sunday is not on either line. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. A walk-in that day depends on a show I did not confirm. I did not open that Sunday's list.

Vosmeier's sentence on the October 7, 2021, page is a description of a room, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says, "I've been here for 16 years and heard these stories ever since I first started." He says, "I think the hospital room in the Fox is just different. There's a hospital bed, a chair, and it's just the creepiest space ever." The same page says the tour stops include "a hospital room still filled with artifacts from 1929," and that "Ghosts you may encounter on the tour include Mary the nurse and a spirit named Roosevelt." Mary, and Roosevelt, are the article's tour list. They are not sentences Vosmeier speaks as his own sighting. I am not pasting those two names onto him. I did not open a 2026 staff page that still calls him vice president. A WSB-TV page dated October 23, 2013, at 5:08 p.m. EDT, prints a line in quotation marks from "Roosevelt (Resident Ghost of the Fox Theatre Boiler Room – deceased, 1945)." That line is written as the ghost talking. It is not a living staff member describing a sighting. I opened that 2013 page. I did not open the 11Alive "Flashback" page. A request for it returned Access Denied. I am not treating Buddy Thompson as a source I opened.

Visit: 660 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308. Box office (855) 285-8499. The building line prints (404) 881-2100. I did not save a tel: href. boxoffice@foxtheatre.org. The frame shows a 640 HOTEL blade on the neighbor. foxtheatre.org. Contact page, checked in October 2026: ticket window Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and three hours before doors on a show day. Call center Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, and Sunday is not on those lines. I did not open that Sunday's list. Vosmeier's hospital-room line is Newmark, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, October 7, 2021. The contact page does not print it.

Fox Theatre in Atlanta, the theatre front, the vertical sign reading FOX, the minaret-like towers, and the marquee
Fox Theatre and the FOX sign, Frank Schulenburg. The downloaded JPEG's Artist field is Frank Schulenburg. The downloaded JPEG's DateTimeOriginal is 2024-05-03 14:29:52, with subseconds 69, which is 2:29 p.m. The file page summary says "3 May 2024, 14:29:52." The JPEG matches that clock and adds the subseconds. Neither the file nor the file page summary prints a time zone. License: CC BY-SA 4.0. Credit is required. Share-alike applies. The Commons original is 3,835 by 4,794 pixels. Original file: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/Fox_Theatre%2C_Atlanta_%282024%29-104A8449.jpg . The file on this page is 960 by 1,200. The hero, georgia-haunted-houses.jpg, is this same Fox frame. It was not upscaled. The description says "The iconic Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia, on the late afternoon of May 3, 2024." The subject is the theatre front, the vertical sign reading FOX, the minaret-like towers, and the marquee. Those are the street front in this frame. The frame does not print 660. The marquee in this frame advertises Georgia Natural Gas and visit gng.com. That board is a board. It is not a 2026 show title. Crop to the board and you have left the doors under the marquee. The blade reading 640 HOTEL, and the tower behind it, are a different building. Crop to that blade and you have left the FOX sign. The tall beige block behind the towers is a different building. The lamp post, the flags, and the street are not the theatre. The May 3, 2024, front is the one with the FOX blades and the towers in the same frame. Use that. The frame is 2024. It is not the hospital room, and it is not a 1929 bed.

Springer Opera House, Columbus

The Springer Opera House will sell you a ticket, and the contact page says the box office is open Monday through Friday. The contact page, read in October 2026, does not print Paul Pierce, a young man in the building, or a ghost book. Pierce said, on the theatre's news page dated December 11, 2025, that a young man "stalked the theatre, mocking me," and that the encounter turned him from "Doubting Thomas to True Believer."

The phones do not sit on one line. The contact page prints box office hours "11:00am-3:00pm Monday-Friday (also open 2 hours prior to show time)" and a box-office phone with hyphens and no parentheses. The HTML I saved includes a target tel:+17063273688 on those digits. The target uses a plus and a leading 1. The footer heading prints (706) 327-3688. Administrative hours are "9:00am-5:00pm Tuesday-Friday" and a second phone with hyphens and no parentheses. The clickable target I saved on that number is tel:706-324-5714. The target has no plus and no parentheses. Academy hours use the same Tuesday-through-Friday clock and a third phone with hyphens and no parentheses. I did not save a tel: href on that academy line. 3688, 5714, and 1100 are not the same extension. The visit line uses each printed number with an ordinary +1 link. The box-office link matches tel:+17063273688. It does not use tel:706-324-5714. The email on the footer block is socialt@springeroperahouse.org.

The address does not sit on one number. The contact page prints "103 10th Street, Columbus, GA, 31901" and, lower down, "103 10th St., Columbus, GA 31901." Street, and St., are both on the page. The ZIP is on both. A HABS file title on the Commons category, and the "other versions" line on the interior file I saved, print "105 Tenth Street." 103, and 105, are not the same door number. The visit line uses 103, the number on the contact page I opened.

The hours do not match across the blocks on that contact page. Box office is Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus two hours before show time. Administration and the academy are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The footer hours are "Tue 10am - 5:30pm" through Friday, and they do not print Monday. Eleven to three, nine to five, and ten to 5:30 are not the same clock. The page also prints "We are closed on all Federal Holidays." October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. Sunday is not a federal holiday, and Sunday is not on those lines. The printed office door that day is shut. I did not open that Sunday's performance list. The December 11, 2025, news page says copies of the new ghost book would be at the box office "11 am - 3 pm weekdays," and that the house "will be closed beginning December 22 - January 5." That sentence is on the 2025 page. The contact page I opened in October 2026 does not print that December closure. I am not treating a 2025 holiday shutdown as an October 2026 fact.

Pierce's account on the December 11, 2025, page is his telling, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says, "In my early years as the Springer's director, I heard endless tales of otherworldly apparitions, untimely deaths and mischievous ghostly pranks." He says, "I dismissed them all. Until, that is, I had my own encounter with a young man who stalked the theatre, mocking me." The page says he published The Springer Ghost Book in 2003, "Pierce's fifteenth year as Springer director," and that a collector's edition adds seven stories. I opened the news page. I did not open the book. I am not writing the 2003 stories as if I had. Danielle Patterson-Varner, "Springer Opera House CEO and Executive Producer," says on that page that ghost tours "have become one of the most popular ways to explore the Springer after dark." "The most popular" is her sentence. I am not using it as a checked fact. A request for a WRBL page about Pierce returned Access Denied. I did not open that interview. The contact page does not print Pierce.

Visit: 103 10th Street, Columbus, GA 31901. (706) 327-3688. The box-office target is tel:+17063273688. Administration (706) 324-5714, target tel:706-324-5714. Academy (706) 324-1100. I did not save a tel: href on the academy line. HABS titles print 105 Tenth Street. socialt@springeroperahouse.org. springeroperahouse.org. Contact page, checked in October 2026: box office Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and two hours before show time. Administration Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Footer hours Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Closed on federal holidays. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, so the printed office door is shut. I did not open that Sunday's list. Pierce's young man is the news page dated December 11, 2025. I did not open the book. The contact page does not print Pierce.

Springer Opera House in Columbus, the auditorium, the horseshoe seats, the boxes, and the stage
Springer Opera House interior, unknown author, Historic American Buildings Survey, Library of Congress. The file page lists the author as unknown. The description says the file is a crop of a 1980 survey view. The Commons original returned 429, so the saved file started as the 1,280-pixel thumbnail. That thumbnail carries no EXIF clock. The file page date line says 1980 and does not print a day or a clock. License: public domain, a work of a National Park Service employee. Credit is not required by the license. Share-alike does not apply. The survey name is on screen anyway. The Commons original is 4,913 by 3,885 pixels. Original file: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bd/Springer_Opera_House_-_Interior_%28Columbus%2C_Georgia%29.jpg . The file on this page is 1,200 by 949. It was not upscaled. The description says "Springer Opera House - Interior (Columbus, Georgia) (cropped)." The subject is the auditorium, the horseshoe seats, the boxes, and the stage. That room is the house in this frame. The frame does not print 103, and it does not print 105. The right edge carries a survey label, HABS No. GA-295-2. Crop to that strip and you have left the seats. A blank screen on the stage is a screen. It is not a 2026 show. A flag hangs on the front of a box. Crop to the flag and you have left the house. A companion file, Officer candidates volunteer at Springer Opera House 140208-A-KD838-582.jpg, Sgt. Tanangachi Mfuni, February 8, 2014, public domain as a U.S. Army work, at 2,448 by 3,264 pixels, is four people under a Les Misérables banner. It was not saved. The 1980 interior is the one the description names as the opera house. Use that. The frame is 1980. It is not the young man in Pierce's account, and it is not a ghost-tour stop.

Grand Opera House, Macon

The Grand Opera House will sell you a ticket, and the visit page says the downtown box office is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The visit page, read in October 2026, does not print Bob Mavity, a piano, or Randell Widner. Mavity, "the senior technical director at the Grand," told Ed Grisamore, in a Macon Melody story dated October 30, 2025, that he has heard piano music after he sealed the building, and that he says, "Enjoy the piano, Randell."

The name does not sit on one line. The homepage title is "The Piedmont Grand Opera House." The visit-page footer prints "The Grand Opera House" at "651 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201," and the copyright line prints "Grand Opera House." Grisamore's story says "the Piedmont Grand Opera House" and "the Grand" and "651 Mulberry Street." Michael W. Pannell's Macon Magazine story, dated April 15, 2020, prints "The Grand Opera House" and "the Grand." The marquee in the Commons frame reads GRAND. Piedmont Grand Opera House, Grand Opera House, the Grand, and GRAND are all in print. The visit line uses Grand Opera House, the words on the footer and on the marquee, and it uses 651 Mulberry Street.

The phone matches on the digits and not on the punctuation. The header prints the box-office digits with hyphens and no parentheses. The footer prints (478) 301-5470. The clickable target I saved is tel:+14783015470. The target uses a plus and a leading 1. The digits match. The visit line uses those ten digits with an ordinary +1 link. It does not use a second number, because the pages I opened do not print one.

The hours match on the days and not on the dashes. The visit page prints phone sales "Tuesdays and Thursdays 12 p.m.-4 p.m." and "Fridays 12 p.m.-6 p.m." The downtown box office block prints "Tuesday and Thursday, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m." and "Friday 12 p.m.-6 p.m." The footer prints "Tuesday and Thursday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Friday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m." Tuesday and Thursday until 4, and Friday until 6, are the same clock in different type. Sunday is not on those lines. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. The printed box office that day is shut. The homepage text I saved prints event lines for October 17, October 24, and October 30. It does not print October 4. I did not open a separate Sunday list. A University Center box office at "1501 Mercer University Drive, Macon, GA 31207" is "Open during game day operations only." That is not the Mulberry door.

Mavity's account on the October 30, 2025, page is what he says he has experienced, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says, "He has been my constant companion for 31 years." The 2020 magazine page says he "has been climbing around its nooks and crannies for 26 years." Thirty-one years in October 2025, and twenty-six years in April 2020, are both in print. I did not open a hire date. He says he has "witnessed light racks levitating 10 feet above the stage," and that on surveillance video he has seen light "sweep from corner regions of the stage." He says he sometimes stays in the office and tells the room, "Enjoy the piano, Randell." Grisamore writes that "the chair on the end 11 rows back to the left facing the stage is unofficially reserved for Randell," and that there are 986 seats. 986 is Grisamore's sentence. I did not see 986 on the theatre pages I opened.

The death does not sit on one telling. Grisamore writes that Widner "worked at the Piedmont Grand Opera House only four months in the summer of 1971," that he "was named managing director at the Grand" in May 1971, and that he died "on September 9, 1971," at 47. Grisamore writes that the death "was first ruled a suicide but later concluded to be an accidental overdose." Mavity says, "He went up there with sleeping pills, whiskey and a pistol," and "His death has always been suspicious to me." Pannell's 2020 page quotes Mavity calling him "the executive director here into the early 1970s," spells the name Randall, and says "there's one death on record presumed to be a suicide, according to Mavity." The same page says, "Public record says he had the pistol to shoot pigeons." Randell, and Randall, are not the same spelling. Managing director, and executive director, are not the same title. Suicide, accidental overdose, and a pistol for pigeons are not the same conclusion. I opened both pages. I did not open a death record. The 2026 visit page does not print Widner.

Mavity also told Grisamore he has "never been able to find her name or a date" for a "Lady in White," that he has twice heard a woman singing, and that once he saw "the silhouette of a woman walking through a curtain in the balcony box seats." That woman is a second story on the same page. She is not the piano. I am not folding her into Randell.

Visit: 651 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201, the visit page. The header titles the house The Piedmont Grand Opera House. The footer prints The Grand Opera House. The marquee reads GRAND. (478) 301-5470. The target is tel:+14783015470. The header prints the same digits with hyphens and no parentheses. thegrandmacon.com. Visit page, checked in October 2026: downtown box office Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 4 p.m., Friday noon to 6 p.m. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, so the printed box office is shut. I did not open a show on that date. Mavity's piano is Grisamore, Macon Melody, October 30, 2025. The 2020 magazine spells Randall and says executive director. The visit page does not print Mavity.

Grand Opera House in Macon, the brick front, the marquee reading GRAND, and the doors under the sign
Grand Opera House and the GRAND marquee, Bubba73 on the file-page author line. The downloaded JPEG's Artist field is Jud McCranie, and the Copyright field is "2025 JUD MCCRANIE ROME,GA." The file-page metadata table also prints Author Jud McCranie. Bubba73, and Jud McCranie, are both on the file page. I did not open a user page that says they are the same person. The downloaded JPEG's DateTimeOriginal is 2025-03-08 10:29:01, with subseconds 65, and OffsetTimeOriginal -05:00, which is 10:29 a.m. at UTC-5, 9:29 a.m. CT. The file page summary says "8 March 2025, 10:29:01" and does not print an offset. The metadata table prints "10:29, 8 March 2025." The JPEG's DateTime, the file-change clock, is 2025-03-14 14:20:41, with OffsetTime -05:00. The file history line for the current upload says "18:38, 14 March 2025" and does not print a zone. License: CC BY-SA 4.0. Credit is required. Share-alike applies. The Commons original is 3,765 by 3,835 pixels. Original file: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/Grand_Opera_House%2C_Macon%2C_GA%2C_US.jpg . The file on this page is 1,178 by 1,200. It was not upscaled. The description says "Grand Opera House" and gives National Register reference 70000196. The subject is the brick front, the marquee reading GRAND, and the doors under that sign. Those doors are the street doors in this frame. The frame does not print 651. The letter board under the marquee is a board in a March 8, 2025, frame. It is not an October 2026 show time. Crop to the board and you have left the doors. Shrubs in front of the entrance are not the theatre. Crop to the shrubs and you have left the doors. A poster in the left-hand window is a poster. The cars, the lamp posts, the utility pole, and the bare tree are not the theatre. A slice of a different building shows at the right edge. The March 8, 2025, front is the one the description names as the Grand Opera House. Use that. The frame is 2025. It is not the piano, and it is not the balcony box in Mavity's account.

Hay House, Macon

Hay House will let you take a guided tour, and the visit page says the house is open Wednesday through Sunday. The visit page, read in October 2026, does not print Darin McClure, a chest of drawers, or Mary-Ellen Felton. McClure, "a board member of the Johnston-Felton-Hay House," told Tyler Jones, in a Macon Newsroom story dated October 29, 2021, that unexplainable things have kept happening across his thirty years as a volunteer.

The address does not sit on one line. The visit page prints "934 Georgia Ave." under location, and the footer prints "934 Georgia Avenue, Macon, GA 31201." Ave., and Avenue, are both on the site. The ZIP is on the footer. It is not on the location line. Jones's story says the house "has stood on the corner of Spring and Mulberry in downtown Macon for over 160 years." Spring and Mulberry, and 934 Georgia Avenue, are not the same line on the pages I opened. I did not open a map. The visit line uses 934 Georgia Avenue, the footer on the page I opened in October 2026.

The phone matches on the digits and not on the target. The footer prints (478) 742-8155. The clickable target I saved is tel:478-742-8155. The target has hyphens. It does not use a plus. It does not use parentheses. The visit line uses the ten digits with an ordinary +1 link. It does not use tel:478-742-8155.

The hours on the visit page are "Wednesday – Saturday," "10:00 AM – 5:00 PM," "Last tour at 4:00 PM," and "Sunday," "11:00 AM – 5:00 PM," "Last tour at 4:00 PM." Close at 5, and last tour at 4, are both on the page. They are not a conflict. They are two clocks for one visit. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday. The printed door that day is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour at 4 p.m. The same page lists "Legends & Lore" and "Haunts and History on the Hill" as separate programs. The ordinary door is the daily guided tour, not those evening titles. I did not open a ticket price.

McClure's account is what he told Jones, not a finding that a spirit has been proved. He says, "At Hay House, over the 30 years I have been a volunteer, there has never been a time when the staff, contractors, or sometimes even guests did not have something unexplainable happen." Jones writes that McClure "says there are reports of lights flickering, voices, and even ghosts," and that "one of the board members of the house claims he witnessed the ghost of former owner, Mary-Ellen-Felton, looking through a chest of drawers once." Mary-Ellen-Felton, with a hyphen between each word, is the story's spelling. The board member is not named. I am not inventing a name for him. A sighting McClure reports from an unnamed colleague is not McClure saying he saw the woman himself. The 2026 visit page does not print McClure, and it does not print Felton. A Macon Magazine page by William Aultman, dated June 30, 2020, is about a painting in the house. It does not tell this ghost claim. I am not using it as one.

Visit: 934 Georgia Avenue, Macon, GA 31201, the footer. The location line prints 934 Georgia Ave. Jones, October 29, 2021, prints the corner of Spring and Mulberry. (478) 742-8155. The site target is tel:478-742-8155. hayhouse.org. Visit page, checked in October 2026: Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., last tour at 4 p.m. October 4, 2026, is a Sunday, so the printed door is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. McClure's account is Jones, Macon Newsroom, October 29, 2021. The visit page does not print it.

Hay House in Macon, the brick house, the cupola, the porch, and the doors at the top of the front stairs
Hay House and the front stairs, Estaylormd. The file page author line says Estaylormd. I did not open a page that gives another name. The file page date line says "11 October 2020" and does not print a clock. The Commons original returned 429, so the file on this page started as the 1,280-pixel thumbnail. That thumbnail carries no EXIF. License: CC BY-SA 4.0. Credit is required. Share-alike applies. The Commons original is 3,024 by 4,032 pixels. Original file: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/Hay_House%2C_Macon_GA.jpg . The file on this page is 900 by 1,200. It was not upscaled. The description says "Hay House, Macon GA" and gives National Register reference 71000259. The subject is the brick house, the cupola, the porch, and the doors at the top of the front stairs. Those doors are the entrance in this frame. The frame does not print 934. The lawn in the foreground is not the house. Crop to the lawn and you have left the stairs. Trees at the left and the right cover the edges of the facade. Crop to the trees and you have left the porch. The October 11, 2020, front is the one the description names as Hay House. Use that. The frame is 2020. It is not a chest of drawers, and it is not an unnamed board member.

How to use this

Start with the door that matches the week you are actually having. The Fox Theatre box office is (855) 285-8499, at 660 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308. The building line is (404) 881-2100. I did not save a tel: href. boxoffice@foxtheatre.org. The window is Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and it opens three hours before doors on a show day. The call center runs until 6 p.m. on weekdays. October 4 is a Sunday. Sunday is not printed. I did not open that show list. A 640 HOTEL blade in the photo is the neighbor, not the contact-page address. Vosmeier's hospital room is Newmark, October 7, 2021. Mary the nurse and Roosevelt are the article's tour list, not his sighting. The 2013 WSB page has a ghost speaking in quotation marks. I did not open the 11Alive page.

The Springer Opera House box office is (706) 327-3688, at 103 10th Street, Columbus, GA 31901. The target is tel:+17063273688. Administration is (706) 324-5714, target tel:706-324-5714.
